DreamWorks Animation's “Dog Man” film adaptation, first trailer

DreamWorks Animation has released the first trailer for Dog Man, based on the children's book series by Dav Pilkey. The picture book is a spin-off of Pilkey's Captain Underpants series, which inspired the earlier DreamWorks film Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which was released in 2017.

The new “Dog Man” will be released on January 31, 2025 through Universal Pictures.

“Dog Man” is directed by Emmy Award-winning television veteran Peter Hastings, whose credits include “Animaniacs,” “Pinky & the Brain,” “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness,” “Lilo & Stitch: The Series, and Catscratch. He has also worked on various series adaptations of Pilkey's films, including The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants. Produced by Karen Foster of Spirit Untamed.

In the spirit of Captain Underpants, the highly stylized CG design and animation was produced by UK-based Jellyfish Pictures, which had previously produced the DreamWorks feature Spirit Untamed DreamWorks' feature film “Spirit Untamed. The studio also produced the animation for Netflix's The Twits. [The official synopsis via DreamWorks is as follows:

When a loyal police dog and his human police owner are injured together on the job, an outlandish but life-saving surgery melds the two and Dogman is born. Dogman vows to protect and serve, fetch, sit, and turn over.

As Dogman embraces his new identity and strives to impress the chief, he must foil a rather sinister plot by feline supervillain Petey the Cat. Petey's latest plan is to clone himself, creating a kitten, Lil Petey the Cat, to double his ability to commit crimes. But things get complicated when Lil Petey forms an unexpected bond with Dogman.

When Lil Petey falls into the clutches of a common enemy, Dogman and Petey reluctantly join forces in an action-packed race against time to rescue the young kitten.
